In my experience, Talmud is the “missing link” for many modern Jews as they reclaim their connections to Judaism.
Time and time again I see Jews read the Hebrew Bible, and then find that they recognize a substantial disconnect between what they read in the Torah and what they see practiced in normative modern Judaism.
Where does it say we shouldn’t eat cheeseburgers? Where does it talk about lighting candles on Shabbat? Where are the Maccabees and the story of Hanukah?
The answers to all these questions lie in the study of Talmud.
Time and time again, people study Talmud with me and say: “ah, now I understand where so many of the Jewish traditions and so much of the Jewish mentality comes from!”
We are privileged in this generation to have wonderful English translations of the Talmud that allow even non-Hebrew speakers (much less those who don’t know the Aramaic dialect that the Talmud is written in) to seriously study Talmud
I teach a regular Talmud class on Shabbat afternoons (click here for schedule) that allows anyone with even a modicum of Jewish background to explore this most foundational text.
I am also available to teach classes about Talmud, and to facilitate private Talmud groups or individual Talmud study.
