Introduction to Talmud (4 sessions):

These four sessions will give a basic understanding of key concepts of the Talmud and lay a solid foundation for Talmud study.  At least some previous experience with Judaism and/or Jewish texts is necessary for this course:

(1)   What is the Talmud and Where did it Come From?

(2)   What’s in the Talmud and Why should We Care?

(3)   The Methodology of the Talmud

(4)   Applying the lessons—Studying a Sample Page of Talmud

The Talmud on Living a Modern Life (8 sessions):

In this series we will explore the Talmudic Text “Avodah Zarah” whose fundamental theme reflects Jews trying to live in Roman society.  How do we maintain our Jewish identity?  How to we remain in concert with the world around us?  When do we have an obligation to stand up to the forces of the world around us?  This text forces us to ask ourselves what it means to live as a Jew in any non-Jewish society, including the world as a whole.

The Political History of Modern Israel (2 sets of 4 sessions):

These sessions will give a basic understanding of the political history of modern Israel, and will give participants good foundation for understanding the various views present in Israel and the Middle-East today:

1880-1947—Creating a Nation:

(1)   Pogroms, Dreyfuss, Herzl, & Uganda—Pre-State Zionism

(2)   The Aliyot—Early Immigrations to Israel

(3)   The Yishuv—Pre-state Jewish settlements in Israel

(4)   The Long Way Home—Between WWII and the Founding of the State

1948-present—Living as a Nation:

(5)   The War of Independence and the Sinai Campaign

(6)   The 1967 War—West Bank, Gaza, & Jerusalem

(7)   The 6-Day War and Peace with Jordan & Egypt

(8)   Lebanon, Syria, Arafat, Hamas, Turkey, & Iran—Where from Here?

Living Israel—a Vibrant Nation (4 sessions):

Most of Jews’ attention on Israel is focused on the peace process and the Middle-East conflict.  These four sessions will help “outsiders” understand the beauty and challenges of a vibrant, living country of 7 million people:

(1)   Israeli Communities—A Virtual Trip to Some Israeli Cities

(2)   The Kibbutz and the Moshav—Israeli Idealism at its Best

(3)   Demographics of the Israeli Population—Origins and Traditions

(4)   From Cellphones to Irrigation—Israeli Contributions to Global Life

Lesser-Known Periods in Jewish History (8 sessions):

Egypt-Israel-Babylonia-Europe-America-Israel: That’s the flow of Jewish History, right?  But Jewish History has long existed “off the beaten path”.  These 8 sessions explore some of the lesser-known periods and places in Jewish History.

(1)   The Jews of Samaria—the Ones who Didn’t Get to Write the Book

(2)   Not Just to Babylonia—The Jews of Ancient Egypt

(3)   The Karaites—Rejecting Rabbinic Judaism

(4)   The Khazars—a Whole Country Converts to Judaism

(5)   The Golden Age of Spain—Not Exactly the “Dark Ages”

(6)   How Many Messiahs?—Jesus’ Followers Weren’t the Only Jews in History who Claimed Their Teacher was “The One”

(7)   Amsterdam, Turkey, Chile and Brazil—Post-Inquisition Emigrations

(8)   Italy, Salonica, and North Africa—A Look at Sephardic Communities

Interesting Jewish Communities Around the World (4 sessions):

America and American Jews all-too-often think of Judaism the way it might have been in the 19th-century European Shtetl—poverty, bagels, wry humor, wise Rabbis, the Czar, pogroms, and Tevia.  So many beautiful Jewish communities have existed and still exist around the world.  These 4 sessions explore some of the lesser-known Jewish communities and shed light on the variety of Judaism and Jewish experience:

(1)   The Khazars—a Whole Country Cconverts to Judaism

(2)   Jews of India & China—Multiple Eras along Multiple Trade Routes

(3)   Jews of Ethiopia—A Remnant of Biblical Judaism?

(4) Jews of Mexico--"Anusim" Recovering their Jewish Heritage
