Couple’s Checklist

for a Typical Jewish Wedding
with Rabbi Yitzhak Miller

Note that we will review this list for your wedding in case any of the items are not applicable.

  • RINGS—wedding bands.  If you have an engagement ring separate from the wedding band, then leave the engagement ring on, and we use the wedding band for the ceremony.
  • A GLASS TO BREAK (lightbulb is also o.k.  If you use a glass, make sure it’s something with a thin stem and base so that nobody twists an ankle).  Whatever you use, put it in a Ziploc bag and then wrap it in a napkin or put it in a cloth bag so that no shards of glass come through.  There are also some retailers who provide multicolored glass specifically intended for breaking at a wedding and then do cool things with it like make a mezuzah out of it for your house.
  • KETUBAH—framed, but leave the glass out so we can sign it
A recommended source for Ketubahs is www.MPArtworks.com
Type in the following DISCOUNT CODE to receive 10% off and also have them donate 20% of  your purchase to charity:
    RRMF3H10YZ1B81
  • PEN to Sign the Ketubah (any pen of your choice, but some people like to use a special pen, and some ketubah companies include a pen with their ketubah that works particularly well on their paper.
  • A STAND/EASEL to hold the ketubah for placement next to the chuppah during the ceremony
  • WINE OR GRAPE JUICE—This is always the tricky one.  We not only need kosher wine, but we need wine that is specifically KOSHER FOR KIDDUSH.  How can you know?  Anything made by Manischewitz, Kedem, or Magen David will work.  BARON HERZOG, GOLAN, CARMEL, etc—all the good wines—may be kosher to drink with a kosher meal, but THEY ARE NOT KOSHER FOR KIDDUSH.  Kedem Kosher-for-kiddush white grape juice is available in the kosher foods section of most supermarkets, and stores like Trader Joes often carry Manishewitz white Concord Grape wine.
  • WINE GLASSES—TWO.  Any two are absolutely fine.  Always a nice tradition if you have ones that you will be using for Shabbat in your home, but as long as there are 2 separate glasses, it will work.  Often I have had couples use the 2 champagne flutes that they had engraved with their names on them for toasts for the reception.  That’s absolutely fine, but there must be 2 separate glasses.
  • YARMULKES (not required for everyone to wear, but it is appropriate to have them available for guests at a Jewish wedding)
  • WEDDING PROGRAMS (often helpful for describing various traditions).
Click here for a sample wedding program.
  • WEDDING LICENSE (available from any county office anywhere in the State of California for any wedding anyplace in California.  If there will be no witnesses to the wedding or if you want the wedding confidential, then you need to obtain a “confidential marriage license” which must be issued by the county in which the wedding will be performed.
  • Someplace to put rings, wine, etc during the ceremony.
A SMALL TABLE (approx TV-tray size) to go under the chuppah is typical.
