Inland children learn Hanukkah's true meaning

Until a few years ago, Rachael Hermann knew almost nothing about Hanukkah -- except that she'd receive one present for each of the eight days of the Jewish holiday.

Then the 13-year-old Riverside girl learned the true meaning of Hanukkah. This year, Rachael gladly agreed to forgo one of the eight gifts so her parents could donate money to a group that buys mosquito nets to protect Africans from malaria.

"It's not all about taking, taking, taking," Hermann said Tuesday before her Hebrew class lit the first menorah candles at Temple Beth El in Riverside. "It's about giving, too, and spreading the charity and joy of Hanukkah, even if you don't know the people you're helping."

[Rabbi] Miller [of Temple Beth El] said the message he emphasizes to children at [the] Temple is the importance of retaining pride in being Jewish while living in an overwhelmingly non-Jewish culture.

For example, he advises them how to react when someone wishes "Merry Christmas" to them.

Say anything you want, he tells them, just reply respectfully and without hiding your Judaism.

In practice sessions last month, kids came up with replies such as "I'm Jewish, so I'll have a Happy Hanukkah, but thank you for your thoughts" or "You have a merry Christmas and I'll have a happy Hanukkah."

"We want our kids to be proud of being Jewish, and not be ashamed," Miller said. "And that means training them to work successfully in a non-Jewish culture."
